Yuri Lapshin

October 13, 2026

On October 13, the Perm Art Residence hosted a celebration of the 85th anniversary of Yuri Nikolaevich Lapshin, the most famous artist in the Perm region. The event coincided with the opening of his exhibition “Portrait of Time,” which featured paintings, stage design, graphics, and objects created from the early 1970s to the present day. Despite his age, Lapshin continues to work with remarkable energy. He is not afraid to experiment with materials: alongside large, colour‑rich canvases, there are works on wood, cardboard, found boards and fragments of plywood that once served as decorations. This boldness is the result of vast craft experience and the rare creative freedom that Lapshin has carried through decades. We were pleased to attend the exhibition opening. Our creative contacts have been going on for more than one year. Yuri Nikolaevich’s exhibition was held in the gallery of the Yekaterinburg Academy of Contemporary Art in 2024. His works were presented at the exhibitions “Underground – 2025” and “Underground – 2026” in Yekaterinburg. And the exhibition of Vasily Ambalaev’s works, “There Are No Mistakes in the Paintings,” was showcased at the Perm Art Residence in 2024. Yuri Nikolaevich Lapshin is a member of the Union of Artists of Russia, a painter, graphic artist, and theatre and film designer. He is the artistic director of the Perm Art Residence project. The artist has been exhibiting since 1964 in Russia, and since 1984 abroad. Over these years, he has participated in more than 100 exhibitions in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other major cities in Russia. Yuri Nikolaevich’s works are held in galleries, museums, and private collections in the USA, Germany, France, Japan, and Spain.
